A Unique Crafting and Planting Project

If you are anything like me you love crystals, rainbows, and plants. If you don’t love those 3 things, then please click away now, because this project combines all 3 elements into one joyous window display of happiness!

There is something magical about the way crystals project rainbows into a room space when the sunlight hits them at just the right place. I feel so happy and relaxed when I see them in the mornings and late afternoons. My kids love them, and my dogs chase the rainbows sometimes too.

I also collect Air Plants (Tillandsia). I bought a 10 pack online. They are cute little plants that fit neatly in the palm of your hand, without soil! What?! How can that be?

Tillandsia are epiphytes. This means they grow attached to other plants or objects, such as trees, rocks, or even wires. They do not need soil to grow, as they absorb moisture and nutrients from the air through their specialized leaves called trichomes.

Air Plants are in the Bromeliad family. There are over 650 species within this genus, making it one of the largest genera in the bromeliad family. In their wild habitats they grow on trees and their roots gently attach to the trees. If you are keeping an air plant as a house plant, you can even trim the roots because they are not necessary for the plant to grow.

Overall, Air Plants are very easy to care for and did you know that they even flower?! Make sure to fertilize them weekly so you can enjoy their once-in-their-lifetime blooms. They only bloom once and then they give off pups. Their pups can be separated, and they will bring you future blooms. Their ability to absorb moisture and nutrients from the air allows them to survive and thrive in diverse ecosystems.

Because of the versatility of these adorable little plants, I find them to be inspiring. I’ve been seeking out some imaginative ways to display them. In the past I would just place them on a beautiful bowl or stone, but why not display them hanging in the air?

I found this suncatcher kit and I really wanted to make some as gifts for friends, so I bought it. When I brought it home the ideas clicked together that I could use the large open shapes in the chains as holders for the air plants.

With this kit it comes with pliers so that was convenient. If you have any experience making jewelry using jump rings, then this will be a piece of cake for you.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Spread out all of my pieces on a plate
  2. Layout and arrange the designs that you want
    1. Note that if you don’t have air plants, these still make beautiful suncatchers
  3. Use the jump rings and pliers to connect each piece.
  4. The set comes with hanging hooks for easy display
  5. Check the length of your window and were the sun hits the crystals for perfect room rainbows
  6. Add your air plants to the display
  7. Water your Air Plants by removing them and soaking them in water for 1 hour once a week. Then mist them with a fertilizer for Air Plants afterwards.

Be creative, be safe, and be flexible because in life everything changes.

Let me know in the comments if you try this project. If you aren’t feeling crafty, send me a message and I’d love to make one for you. I plan to follow up on this article with more stories about the magic of Air Plants for spirit healing.

Love and Light,
