Did you receive Phalaenopsis Orchids (Moth Orchids) as a gift or buy some on a whim at the grocery store because their flowers were just so beautiful, only to bring them home and they wilted or wouldn’t bloom again?
Don’t worry, this is a common happening for new orchid owners.
Here are some tips to keep your Phalaenopsis Orchids happy in your home.
- Watering – Water your orchids weekly using cool, filtered water. Cooler water encourages blooms. Some orchid enthusiasts even use a few ice cubes the melt over the peat moss rather than water.
- Drainage – If you have an orchid in wood chips, and it is housed in a 2-layer pot, then you need to make sure that after watering the bottom of the plant is not sitting in water. Then, this is critical step, lift the inner liner up and dump out any access water from the base. This prevents root rot.
- Fertilize – I use this easy misting fertilizer after watering, and I get beautiful blooms regularly.
- Light – Phalaenopsis orchids like bright indirect light. In the wild, orchids grow on tree limbs in tropical climates. So, they get some shade from the trees.
- Humidity – Keep your orchids in a warm room that gets moisture and humidity in the air like a kitchen or bathroom.
- Bloom Times – Keep in mind that Phalaenopsis orchids like to bloom during the cooler months. They typically only bloom once or twice per year but their blooms should last for a month or two.
